It is time for us to wake up. We are living through a monumental crisis, which translates as a rare moment of opportunity in the world. Western industrialized nations are being cannibalized by the financial monster we ourselves created. It is not enough to idly sit by and witness the fall of an empire when we, the people, are the collateral damage of economic collapse.
It is time to OCCUPY.
Let’s take inventory:
In the United States….
- 14 million Americans are unemployed, and 24 million can’t find fulltime employment
- 50 million can’t go to the doctor when they are sick because they can’t afford health insurance
- 47 million are living in poverty and need government assistance to eat food
- 15 million owe more on their house than it is worth
- Fewer than half of families (47%) can afford to send their kids to college and, yet, 78% say they are willing to take out large loans to fund higher education, with nearly 40% of those federal loans in default after 15 years of repayment
How did we get here?
Noam Chomsky sums it up nicely:
“Anyone with eyes open knows that the gangsterism of Wall Street — financial institutions generally — has caused severe damage to the people of the United States (and the world). And should also know that it has been doing so increasingly for over 30 years, as their power in the economy has radically increased, and with it their political power. That has set in motion a vicious cycle that has concentrated immense wealth, and with it political power, in a tiny sector of the population, a fraction of 1%, while the rest increasingly become what is sometimes called “a precariat” — seeking to survive in a precarious existence. They also carry out these ugly activities with almost complete impunity — not only too big to fail, but also ‘too big to jail’.”
We are old, young, middle-aged, black, brown, yellow, white, male, female, republican, democrat, libertarian, environmentalist, anarchist, independent, and all pissed the fuck off because we think that….
We, too, are too big to fail.
The good news is that it looks like something is about to break—the centre cannot hold—opening the space for a necessary transformation and a total rethink of global economic affairs. But in order for change to happen, we all need to be present for it. There is no time for apathy. Get off Facebook. Turn off your televisions. Grab your family and your friends, go outside and OCCUPY.
Awareness fuels the action that will forge our new reality, and the action is OCCUPY.
This is a call to action:
On October 15th, in two days, there will be global demonstrations in 869 cities in 71 countries around the world participating in the Occupy Wall Street movement that started nearly a month ago in New York City.
Occupy Wall Street is a leaderless, grassroots series of peaceful demonstrations protesting against social and economic inequality, corporate greed, the influence of corporate money and lobbyists on democracy, and the absence of legal repercussions behind the recent global financial crisis.
One of the central objectives of the movement is for President Obama to ordain a Presidential Commission tasked with ending the influence that big business and the wealthiest 1% of Americans has on U.S. laws and policies. The idea is that if we can restore democracy in America and a belief in People over Profit, we can fix the inequity and injustice that plagues our country.
“The courageous and honorable protests underway in Wall Street should serve to bring this calamity to public attention, and to lead to dedicated efforts to overcome it and set the society on a more healthy course.” –Noam Chomsky
